Stockings are a close fitting item of clothing that covers the legs.
Originally stockings were made of wool, cotton or silk and it is only as recent as the 20th century when nylon was discovered that stockings referred to as nylons were launched into the fashion scene. In the 16th century the invention of the knitting machine meant that stockings could be produced in large quantise although they were made flat so had to be sewn together forming a seam. This method continued until the early 20th century when a circular knitting machine was invented. In the 1930’s the synthetic fabric nylon was discovered, so called because the first showcase for it was New York. The popularity for this new type of stocking was so vast that the silk market suffered. The new fabric meant that stockings could be made a lot finer but still had the same strength and also died into many colours. During the second world war stockings in great Britain and part of Europe became scarce but in Americas they were still available .Hence American service men when visiting these countries could use them as a bartering tool.
By the middle of the century tights were made to resemble the shape of the leg and these were known as fully fashioned. New advances in technology meant stockings could be made that had more elasticity hence it they became available in a wide selection of style and not necessarily fully fashioned. By the 1960’s the introduction of tights saw a decline in the stocking industry and women favoured them less as general day wear.
