A suspender belt is also known as garter belt depending on the country. It is an item of women’s underwear that is made of a strip of fabric that would have originally been stiffened and is fastened around the waist or hips to hold stockings in place. In recent times materials such as elastic or lace have been used to make them look more appealing.  Suspender belts commonly have 4 clips but some may have 6 or 8. The more clips the suspender belt has the more it will hold the stockings in place making them more practical for wearing with patterned of seamed stockings where it was necessary for them to remain in the same position on the leg .Clips are made of either metal or more recently plastic.  Suspender belts are made in a variety of colours and often matching pants are available.
