It is only in the 20th century that the word Basque is really associated with lingerie. Traditionally a sleeveless top with thin or no straps, it is a combination of a bra and suspender. The Basque is similar to a corset with hook and eye fastenings or laces either at the front or back with boning for support, tends to be longer in length than the bustier, and often dips to a point at the front. Some Basques have bra cups and suspenders,

Today’s styles are often decorated with lace and ribbons and they are now worn as outer garments although provide less support than the originals.
