Bras are a garment worn by women to support the breasts. Typically a brassiere consists of two cups that are attached to a band of material that goes under the bust around the rib cage and fastens at the back and are supported by two narrow straps of material that go across each shoulder. It was not until the latter part of the 19th century and the early part twentieth century that brassieres started to look like those of today’s styles and one of these early designs was made from 2 hankies and some ribbon by an American socialite who did not wear to wear a heavy undergarment under her lightweight evening dress. Corsets became less popular because of the shortage of metal and by the 1930’s bras started to be mass-produced. The popular term for Brassiere became shorted to bra. Cups sizes were introduced and with new types of synthetic fabrics available in the 1940’s different types of styles and designs became popular. During the 1960’s the introduction of Lycra gave bras an increased flexibility although for a while bras declined in popularity as the trend to go braless emerged. Over the decades fashion trends have dictated the shape and style and nowadays improved technology has meant the bra can be produced in a vast assortment of style ,colours, materials and can decorated with ribbons, lace beads and sequins and can be seen to be worn as less of a support undergarment and more of a fashion item.
