A bustier is a combination of a corset and basque, however it is shorter than a basque finishing at the waist and often strapless or with narrow straps. Originally it would have been boned and hand made but with the industrial revolution, came mass production and other materials were needed to replace the traditional whale bones that had previously been used. A bustier was worn to push up the bust and this was achieved by pulling the midriff in with the use of bones or something similar.
The use of man made fabrics like, cheaper materials and fashion trends have meant the original style of bustier has changed and whereas it was once made of white cotton or linen and worn as an undergarment it became fashionable item that can be worn as outerwear, being available in an array of colours and materials and decorated with lace and ribbons.
