A corset is an item of clothing traditionally an undergarment that was be worn by women or men for fashion and medical purposes.
Thought to date back to earliest times the shape and style of corsets has changed over the centuries, some were made to make the waist smaller and push the bust up whilst other corsets emphasized the waist and hips. Traditionally laced at the back some were made with hooks and eyes at the front so the wearer would not need assistance in putting it on. There were various ways in which the laces were tied and this depended on the fashion trend of the time.
A corset would be made of material and stiffened with stays or ribs made from
Whalebone, featherbone, wood, cane, steel or ivory but in more recent years plastic is often used. The traditional corset was made by corset makers. Some fashion trends resulted in the corsets being so tight so as to achieve a very small waist which could result in permanent damage to the wearer. Sometimes corsets have clips so that stockings could be attached to them.
By the 1920 corsets had become unfashionable as an item of underwear.
The modern corset has become a fashion outerwear item and resembles less its predecessor, having less support and is made of a variety of materials and available in an array of colours.
